Five years ago, when Dave and I had just started dating, we attended Pokemon’s 10th Anniversary in Bryant Park in New York City. The day was amazing and perfect. There was a ton of awesome stuff to do, see, and buy, as well as unique Event Pokemon that were being distributed for free to trainers. Dave and I waited in line foreverrr, but I was given a Pikachu, along with this Umbreon.

I gradually leveled up the Umbreon I received, and he became part of my strongest team, helping me win dozens of tough battles. Every time a new game came out, I would trade him forward to myself so I could always have him with me. Last night, I finally got the opportunity to transfer him to my White Version, which would be the 4th game he’s been traded to. His description now reads, “Apparently arrived at Lv. 100 after a long travel through time.”

I know it sounds stupid and childish and pointless, but having this one Pokemon for all these years is really special to me. He reminds me of the cute, early time of Dave and I’s relationship when we were just a couple of dorky highschool kids. Now we’re basically adults, with plans of moving in together soon and eventually getting married and starting a family. We both have always loved video games and nerdy things, especially Pokemon. We grew up with it. It may sound silly to some people, but having this Pokemon with me for such a long time is a happy, little reminder of the good times Dave and I have had together over the past five years. Even though a lot of things are changing in our lives, and we’re being handed more and more responsibility, the truth is that we really are still kids at heart. Keeping that kind of spirited, fun-loving attitude is important to us, and it always will be. We like to be ourselves and like what we like, regardless of what anyone else thinks about us. And personally, I don’t care what anybody says… I hope I can manage to hang on to this Umbreon for many, many more years to come. :’)
